In this day and age, using technology is inevitable. This is the digital era and the use of the internet, specifically social media sites, has become VERY common to say the least. In 2012, more than 1 billion users had accessed social media networks, and this year the numbers are still rising at alarming rates, especially with talks from Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Larry Page (Google) of World Internet Access! Facebook still far surpasses any other social network for it’s number of active users, however Twitter is proving itself to be the fastest growing social network; It is estimated that 1 million accounts are added to it every day.
Facebook has been updating and changing different features so that its services may become better and more convenient for users. The social network has more than 600 million users on a daily basis. Over 700 million mobile users access it per month.
YouTube is the most popular video viewing platform and video search engine. According to the company, more than 1 million channels from 30 countries are generating revenue from producing content on YouTube. It’s a big competitor to major TV networks being that more than 1 billion unique viewers visit the website and Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month — that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth, and 50% more than last year. According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network, and is localized in 56 countries and across 61 languages. With 100 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, there is enough content to keep someone glued to their screen for many lifetimes.
A social platform such as Foursquare has been very beneficial to location based businesses. Recently Foursquare has begun to monetize its line of products/services quite well in a Cost Per Action (“CPA”) approach. This means that they are charging businesses based on the actions of the site’s users. With typical Pay Per Click (“PPC”) advertising a business would pay a fixed (or variable) amount based on the clicks and impressions of an advertisement. Now, Foursquare has taken this approach to the next level by only charging businesses when people physically walk-in to their location – this is HUGE! This new approach to social media marketing has paved the way for the company’s success. Facebook also has a similar service known as “places”, however in this case they aren’t the major player in the space.
