During the week of their 15th Anniversary, Google just announced the “Hummingbird” Algorithm update earlier today (Thurs, Sept 26th-2013) from the Garage where it all started…
It’s focus is to better match long tail, and more detailed/specific search queries with search engine results pages, or “SERPs”. Basically for those using long tailed searches, you can expect more accurate web pages and documents to be returned/displayed.
Amit Singhal, Google’s Senior Vice President of Search mentions in a blog post “Remember what it was like to search in 1998? You’d sit down and boot up your bulky computer, dial up on your squawky modem, type in some keywords, and get 10 blue links to websites that had those words,” indicating things have come a looooong way since then! Hummingbird is the company’s most significant Algorithm change since Google switched to “Caffeine” back in 2010.
Google has also introduced more advanced voice queries which reply with more of a “human quality” IMO.
In the case of the Eiffel Tower, a user would need to say “Eiffel Tower” only once in a series of questions, and search will remember the context.
For example it may return “You should not be spending your time searching, you should be spending your time living,” said Singhal.
This new Algorithm update coupled with the Google+ YouTube Comments update will just further solidify Google in the search and social media space, as well as cause a few disrupts. I for one, can’t wait to see how Google+ continues to grow as part of Google’s long term “master plan”.
